Woodruff vs Emerald, 10/12/2018

Postby Wolverine Legend » Tue Oct 09, 2018 11:12 pm

The Wolverines stay home for a second straight week and host the Emerald Vikings in a crucial game for Region III-3A seeding. Emerald was ranked #2 in 3A to start the season and were a favorite to contend for an upper-state title, but have struggled mightily to a 2-5 record. Woodruff, meanwhile, is looking to rebound from a tough 42-28 loss to Union County.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 14-0 lead last week before seeing the game slip away late, but quarterback Keegan Halloran was exemplary yet again as he has passed for 1,450 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. Junior wide receiver Omarion McKelvin has exploded on the scene and has nearly 700 yards receiving and 8 touchdowns on the year as well. Woodruff will also look to get the running game back on track this week against a struggling Emerald defense, and the offensive line, which has been susceptible to big defensive fronts, will be tested yet again by a mammoth Emerald squad with size to spare. Defensively, the Wolverines are smaller up front and that came to bare against Union County as the Yellow Jackets’ big OL paved the way late. That again comes into play Friday, as the Emerald OL is even bigger and averages over 290 pounds across.

The Vikings, for whatever reason that has nothing to do with talent, have vastly underachieved this year. They have the state’s top recruit in tight end/quarterback Luke Deal and an extremely athletic cast of playmakers led by Jamil Martin at running back and Zack Amerson at wide receiver. Scoring hasn’t necessarily been the problem, as the Vikings do score at a 31 points per game clip, but they have had precious little success in stopping anyone from scoring. The back seven on defense is comprised mostly of inexperienced sophomores so teams that can pass vertically, like Woodruff, create a match-up nightmare for Emerald. The Vikings have size up front, their only advantage against the Wolverines, but the question remains whether or not they can take advantage of it.

This is a must win game for both teams should they wish to host at least one play-off game at home. One knock on the Vikings has been lack of discipline, and if Woodruff can take advantage of that then it could be a long night for Emerald. Emerald has an advantage when they have the ball in their size, but I’m not sure they can contain the Wolverines’ prolific offense enough for it to matter. If Woodruff can get stops early and build a lead, the run-centric Emerald offense will have a hard time catching up as the Vikings are not as dynamic offensively as Union County. In the end, Halloran uses his arm to burn the Vikings’ young secondary, Emerald will get called for a few costly penalties, and the Wolverines will pull away in the second half. When the clock hits zero...

Legend said it correctly, this is a really a must win for the Wolverines.
Their size is of course a concern. I know our young men and coaches will be ready.

Emerald has no business being as bad as they are defensively.

Their coaching staff and roster have been mismanaged.

Figure Woodruff takes this one, and probably comfortably. Don't understand Emerald. A team that always seems to have an abundance of talent. But so undisciplined, they never play like. Would think Woodruffs biggest opponent is an emotional hangover from last week.

Very good game by the Wolverines. Best coached WHS football team since Coach V.

Emerald is indeed a puzzle.

Emerald continues to have absolutely no answers defensively.

Chris Deal is calling a mall cop defense. They have on uniforms but really can’t stop anyone.

It’s past time for a change. McMahon’s time is up there. His staff is mismanaged, his program has underachieved more than any team in 3A, and it appears he’s lost control.

Favoritism, nepotism, and an inability to find a pulse of today’s athlete have shot McMahon in the foot for years. This season is an embarrassment.

i've seen that firsthand and let be 1st to start some controversy and extend Adams an invitation to move south for next season!!

ST is loaded with talent and you're guaranteed a state title if you come to Rebelville!! No way you should be winning like this at Woodruff this season!! Unbelievable job.

Nice win for the Wolverines 52-14 in a game that wasnt even close. Emerald has to be the most over hyped pre season team ever. A tight end playing QB? No wonder they are so bad.Decisions like that are rediculous. I can see why they didnt have a hundred people show up.I feel sorry for normally a very good program

If Emerald had a 100 fans there, that's about twice as many as they have show up whenever they play A-Town. I reckon the fans already know the outcome before the opening kickoff.
