Knights complete sweep over pesky Trojans

Florence-When West Florence girls basketball coach Kevin Allen thinks about The Byrnes Schools, “private school” doesn’t enter his mind.

“Good basketball team” does.

For the second time this season, Allen’s Knights were taken to the wire by the Trojans on Friday night before pulling out a 49-44 win.

On Nov. 24, West held off The Byrnes Schools 47-43.

“I don’t care what people say about them being a private school,” Allen said. “When you got people like (Meghan) Osborne, (Bree) Jett and (Mary) Gregg, they can play on anyone’s team.

“They played us tough both times and we were fortunate to get out with the wins.”

West (10-5) trailed most of the game and was down 38-33 with six minutes to play. The Knights’ Tanaya Turpin then turned up her game, scoring five of her team-high 20 points in an 8-0 run that gave West a 41-38 lead with 4:50 left.

The Byrnes Schools tied it 42-42 on two free throws from Gregg with 2:02 to play, but didn’t score again until seven seconds were left.

West, meanwhile, took the lead for good, 44-42, on Jessica Downs’ basket with 1:37 to play.

“Down the stretch, we stressed defense and we got a couple stops when we needed it,” Allen said. “We still tried to shoot ourselves in the foot at the end, but were able to pull through it.”

The loss leaves The Byrnes Schools winless in five tries against public schools this season.

“We kind of adopted a motto we will play anybody, anywhere,” Amell said. “Not that we are going to win all those games, but it certainly makes us better.

“I thought we had a good chance tonight, but we just wore down. We played five girls all game and we played last night, so I think that all caught up with us.”

A.J. Scudder added nine points and 11 rebounds for West, which opens Region 6-4A play today at Carolina Forest.

Jett led The Byrnes Schools with 23 points, including five 3-pointers. Osborne added 12 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter, and Gregg had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Kenard Roberts scored 20 points as the Knights jumped to a big lead and improved to 5-9.

“I was feeling confident and the team kept feeding me the ball when I was hot,” Roberts said. “It was a good win. Now we got to get ready for region play.”

West, which defeated The Byrnes Schools 60-50 on Dec. 3, led by as much as 20 points in the first half. The Trojans cut it to 12 points in the fourth quarter, but that’s as close as they would get.

“We got to learn to put the foot on the gas the whole time,” West coach Pete Ellis said. “I was proud that when we got into those sticky situations, we were able to settle ourselves down.”

Shaq Bacote led The Byrnes Schools with 19 points and Blake Sohneman added 10.
“Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them a desire, a dream, a vision.”
