Augusta Christian 35
Heathwood Hall 31
(1 OT)

From today's Augusta Chronicle:

Quarterback's run gives Lions OT win

By Stephen Fastenau | South Carolina Bureau
Saturday, October 04, 2008

Lions quarterback William Banks scored on a 7-yard touchdown run in overtime to beat Heathwood Hall 35-31.

Augusta Christian survived regulation after the Highlanders missed a 21-yard field goal as time expired. Heathwood Hall kicker Cole Fowble was good on a 20-yard attempt in overtime, but Banks third-down scramble trumped it.

"I can't explain it," Banks said as he shook hands with the Highlanders. "I just saw it. I knew I had to get in the end zone."

Banks had rolled left looking to pass, but cut back right and had no one between him and the goal line.

The Lions improved to 2-0 in SCISA Region 1-AAA with two region games remaining.

"Heathwood was a really good team and showed a lot of heart," Lions coach Bruce Lane said. "I felt our kids were resilient."

With the Highlanders marching down the field in the fourth quarter, the Lions forced a fumble and recovered at their own 18 with 1:53 left. They were forced to punt, and the Highlanders' 43-yard return again left them in good position.

But Fowble's kick with 4 seconds left was wide right.

"I thought we had it," said Highlanders quarterback Mac Whalen, who threw for 243 yards. "We just have to move on."

The Lions scored twice in the second quarter, both on third-down plays, after Lane called timeout before each to set something up.

Both times Banks hit receiver Evan Wells. Wells finished with six catches for 88 yards.

"That's just another dimension to our offense," Lane said. "Teams are going to see that they can't put eight or nine in the box. The last couple weeks we've gone vertical and had success."

From this morning's "stet peppah":

Ben Lippen ends Hammond's winning streak
By JOHN DEVLIN - Special to The State

Ben Lippen stormed in the SCISA spotlight Friday night at Hathaway-Weeber Stadium, pulling off a 33-26 upset win against two-time defending champion Hammond before a delighted homecoming crowd.

The Falcons ended Hammond’s 14-game winning streak, and handed the Skyhawks their first region loss since 2005.

“This changes our whole season,” said Ben Lippen coach Reggie Shaw. “We’ve faced a lot of adversity this season. We’ve lost a lot of close games and had to deal with a number of injuries, but these guys have persevered through it all. Tonight we had to step it up on defense where we haven’t been great, and we did it when it mattered the most. We just found a way to beat a great football team. I’m so proud of these guys.”

On a night when defense took a back seat to the two dynamic spread attacks for the most part, the Falcons’ defense made a number of big plays after quarterback Joey Carter’s 32-yard touchdown run at 9:38 upped the Ben Lippen lead to 33-26.

From there, the Falcons defense forced and recovered two fumbles and made a gallant red-zone stand by pressuring Skyhawks quarterback Cliff Ayers into three consecutive incompletions after Hammond reach the Falcons 10-yard line with less than four minutes remaining.

The biggest play off all came when Jason Blackwell pounced on a Hammond fumble after a big hit on Skyhawks receiver Taylor Smith by cornerback Eddie Gaillard at Falcons 49 with 1:05 to go.

“I saw the ball come out, and I just went after it,” said Blackwell. “We had a lot of trouble trying to stop (Hammond), but we made the plays we had to make. This is such a great win it’s hard top put it into words.”

The Falcons, now 3-4 overall and 2-1 in SCISA Region 1-3A, secure a playoff spot with the win, and have a chance to earn a first-round playoff home game for the first time in a number of years.

Hammond opened the fourth quarter with a 91-yard scoring pass from Ayers to Aaron Walters, pulling within 27-26. The Falcons countered with seven-play, 70 yards scoring drive capped by Carter’s third scoring run of the game.

Hammond’s next scoring bid was thwarted by pressure generated by Miles Fisher and Michael Bouabre, forcing Ayers to scrambled and miss on three consecutive pass attempts.

Ben Lippen finished with 509 yards on offense, while Hammond rang up 497.
