Stone Pinckney from Hammond school was offered a full scholarship to play football at the University of Northwestern (in the Big Ten) this past week. The coaches think more D1 offers may come in.
This awesome news for Stone, Hammond, and all of SCISA.
That's huge. Just curious -- how did Stone market himself to Northwestern? Did he attend camp there, send tapes, or otherwise? That's a job well done by someone who has worked hard on and off the field.
You know, there are always people who just dont like to see someone excel (scisafan10 - no need to criticize the kid with your backhanded compliment)
Insider, my son told me he and the coaches sent his tapes all over the place. So my guess is that is how they found out about him.
Anyway, Stone has been tremendous to watch play this year and from what I hear is an excellent student as well. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.
Actually scisafan10, NU is pretty true to letting their recruits play the position they played in high school. There are very few on their roster right now who played a different position. Besides that, NU's coach is picky when it comes to his linebackers. Pat Fitzgerald wants a certain kind of LB, so my guess would be he will probably stick with LB at NU too. It'll be on him to determine how fast he plays.
I am a Northwestern fan who has just heard about the offer to Stone and was hoping to come by and get a little more info on him. He sounds like a great kid and very underrated prospect who can meet NU's very stringent academic requirements. I am surprised to read some comments here questioning whether or not he has the size to contribute at a major D1 level. If he is a legitimate 5"11 and runs a 4.6/40, he can play linebacker in the Big Ten in the 220-225 lb range. These dimensions do not sound like a stretch for Stone. Any info you can provide on Stone would be appreciated.
By the way, the comment about coach Fitzgerald is right on. Fitz, as we call him, has a keen eye for underated linebackers as he was one himself. For those of you who might not know, Fitz was a very late commitment for NU in the mid 1990s and ended up being named two time defensive player of the year in college football while leading Northwestern to its first Rose Bowl in many years. Fitzgerald is in his second season as head coach and has us on the cusp of a 7-5 season and a bowl game if we are able to upset Illinois this week.
Stone is 5'11" 210 pounds. He runs a low 4.6. He is also getting looked at by a bunch of other schools, but I think NU is his only major d1 offer. He is also an outstanding student. I think he is interested in NU and may take a visit there soon. He has a billion tackles and sacks this year and can play the field sideline to sideline.
Thanks for the info. Our understanding is that he is visiting December 1st and we are hopeful to receive his commitment. Do you think distance from home will play a role in his decision? I can tell you that Stone would be hard pressed to beat the combination of academics and major D1 football that NU offers. If he commits, he'll have a chance to play for an up and coming program that should compete for th Big Ten title next year while at the same time get a top notch education that will serve him incredibly well for the rest of his life.
According to Northwestern's Rivals site, Stone has given his commitment to Northwestern following his official visit this past weekend. Stone, congratulations on making a great choice!
Nothing at all he is a good player, but i think everybody knows that he is going to northwestern so we should move on and start talking about basketball the sport that is in season
