OK, this may not be 100% right, but...
I think I read that if the school releases you from your scholarship that, in baseball, you don't have to sit out a year if you transfer.
But don't hold me to that.

dph is correct, 100%. Because any NCAA member inststution only gets 11.4 full scholarships in basesball, the NCAA will let a player transfer without sitting out so that he may get a little bit better deal. Carolina has a total of 0 (ZERO) baseball players on full scholarships this year. That means that everyone on the team is paying for the privelage to play baseball at Carolina! quote: Originally posted by Chief_of_the_Western_Nation: I KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT BASEBALL...AND A FEW OTHER SPORTS....JUST WONDERED WHAT THE STORY WAS..
IMAGINE...PLAYING ON 2 DIFFERENT TEAMS IN 2 CONSECUTIVE CWS.....PRETTY COOL

I'M NOT DOUBTING THAT THEIR IS SOME TRUTH TO THAT JOHNNY...BUT I WOULD THINK THAT THE MAJORITY OF CAROLINA PLAYERS HAVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS....ESPECIALLY THE HIGH PROFILE PLAYERS...UNC DOES AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH SOME OF THEIR OTHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS COMBINING THEM WITH THEIR ATHLETES

Chief, each and every baseball player at Carolina has his own % of scholarship. Some players have more. some have less, some have none. No player is allowed under NCAA rules to have more than 33%. This is why very few juniors, and even fewer seniors play at the collegiate level. MLB usually drafts these kids out of high school and the more likely that they are to go to college, the lower the draft pick. Ron Polk, head coach at Mississippi State is the biggest critic of this because of just what you said, the ability of the Universities to disperse other scholarships at will. Some state universities, such as Mississippi State do not allow this, putting them in a hole against other SEC teams. Title IX is the culprit here, with such sports as women's bowling getting the money that the baseball team needs. Men's college baseball can generate far more revenue than most women's sports. Sorry to say that, but basketball aside, women's sports do not generate dollars. Only a Penguin can be this cool !

Johnny i think the 33% applies to the incoming class of freshman. Until then you were allowed to give a full ride to a baseball player but most didn't because of the lack of schollies available. The NCAA under the new guidlines has indeed put a cap on the percentage a kid can receive. There is, however, no limit on the amount of academic dollars a baseball player can receive so it's not inconceivable that there are several players that are getting a full ride one way or another.
I agree with Ron Polk and wish more coaches would be as vocal with their beliefs..
And keep this in mind Wofford won the SOCON and went to the regionals with a grand total of 3 1/2 or 4 total scholarships available for 30 baseball players....It's an anomally that's for sure but a big tip of the old hat to the kids that earned the crown.

Just make sure when basketball season rolls around that you don't claim to be a Carolina fan. Just make sure you keep pulling for little carolina, because we don't want you.
